Rotarians
are business and professional leaders who take an active role in their
communities while greatly enriching their personal and professional
lives. A Rotary club contains a diverse group of professional leaders
from the community that the club serves.
Membership in a Rotary club offers a number of
benefits, including-
Effecting
change within the community.
Developing
leadership skills.
Gaining
an understanding of — and having an impact on — international
humanitarian issues.
Developing
relationships with community and business leaders.
Through
Rotary's service programs, a Rotary club can have a significant effect
on the quality of life in its community. Programs of The Rotary
Foundation offer opportunities to form international partnerships that
help people in need worldwide. More than 1.2 million Rotarians make
significant contributions to the quality of life at home and around the
globe.
People join Rotary for many reasons. Being with an organization with
other managers or professionals with interest in personal and community
growth is one of the reasons. Others join for friendship, or to learn
more about leadership or management skills.
Community Service is, however, Rotary's underlying purpose. Service
above self – is what Rotary is all about.
There are many needs in the community - and in the world - that are not
paid attention to by governments or other organizations. Rotary uses the
skills and resources of its members to identify community service needs,
to design projects to meet those needs and to provide professional
commitment to complete the projects.
However much a person may help the society in his own style and way,
there are limits – to the extent he or she can contribute as an
individual. On the other hand, the power of giving can multiply several
times over when he is part of a large group of generous people.
Many people
realize that growth happens through attention on multiple aspects of
their lives predominantly the need to be well net-worked in society and
focus on limited aspects of their lives will stunt their growth of their
overall personality. Rotary provides the platform for people to strive
and achieve the potential they are born with. Here are some of the
factors that go to make a successful and growing person.
Rotary
provides opportunities for people to gain in manifold ways, as given
below.
Friendship
- Rotary provides one of the most basic human needs – the
need for friends and fellowship. It is one of the two reasons why Rotary
began in 1905.
Business
Development - The second original reason for Rotary's
beginning was the understanding that everyone needs to network. Rotary
consists of a cross section of who-is-who in the local business
community. Its members come from all walks of life. Rotarians help one
another, and collectively help others.
Personal
Growth and Development - Membership in Rotary continues one's
growth and education in human relations and personal development.
Leadership
Development - Rotary provides ample opportunities for the
development of leadership potential in every member. Serving in Rotary
positions is like an education in Leadership – learning how to motivate,
influence and lead leaders.
Citizenship
in the Community - Membership in a Rotary club makes one a
better community citizen. The average Rotary club consists of some of
the most active citizens of the community.
Continuing
Education - Each week at Rotary there is a program designed
to keep one informed as to what is going on in the community, nation,
and world. Eminent speakers from varied walks of life speak to Rotarians
on different topics, thus enlarging their horizons.
Fun
- Rotary is fun. A lot of fun. Each meeting is fun. The club
projects are fun. Social activities are fun. And the service is fun.
Public

public communication; and opportunity.
Citizenship
in the World - Every Rotarian wears a pin that says- "Rotary
International." Once a Rotarian, the doors of all Rotary clubs the world
over are thrown open to him or her to attend their rotary meetings. What
is more, they will be treated as royal guests. There are over 32,000
clubs in 168 nations and geographical regions. Rotarians have friends in
both one's own community and in the world community.
Assistance
When Traveling - Many Rotarians take advantage of clubs world
wide. A Rotarian who needs a doctor, lawyer, hotel, dentist, advice,
etc., while traveling, just need to connect to these resources through
Rotary.
Entertainment
- Every Rotary club and district has parties and activities
which provide diversion in one's business life. Rotary has conferences,
conventions, assemblies, and institutes which provide entertainment in
addition to Rotary information, education and service.
The
Development of Social Skills - Every week and at various
events Rotary develops one's personality, social and people skills.
Family
Programs - Family participation meetings are part and parcel
of Rotary and this takes care of greater bonding within ones family.
Such get-togethers are designed to assist family members in growth and
the development of ethical values.
Focus
on Youth - Rotary provides one of the world's largest youth
exchange programs; high school and college clubs for future Rotarians
and a host of activities. Interact Clubs meant for the development of
school going children and Rotaract Club for college going students help
in the development of future leaders and citizens.
Vocational
Skills - Every Rotarian is expected to take a part in the
growth and development of his or her own profession or vocation; to
serve on committees and to teach youth about one's job or vocation.
The
Development of Ethics - Rotarians practice a 4-Way Test which
governs one's ethical standards. Rotarians are expected to be ethical in
business and personal relationships.
Cultural
Awareness - Around the world, practically every religion,
country, culture, race, creed, political persuasion, language, color and
ethnic identity is represent in Rotary. It is a cross section of the
world's most prominent citizens from every background. Rotarians become
aware of other cultures and learn to love and work with people
everywhere.
Prestige
- Rotary is the oldest and most prestigious service club in
the world. Its ranks are executives, managers, and professionals- People
who make decisions and influence policy.
Nice
People - Rotarians above all are nice people; the nicest
people on the face of the earth. They are important people who adhere to
the policy - that - while it is nice to be important, it is more
important to be nice.
It
is an open society - of men and women who simply believe in
helping others.
The
Opportunity to Serve - Though this aspect is given at the
end, Rotary is a service club. Its business is mankind; its product is
service. Rotarians provide community service - to both the local and
international communities. This is the best reason perhaps for becoming
a Rotarian- The chance to do something for somebody else, and to sense
the self-fulfillment which comes in the process. |
