In Madras [now known as Chennai], the first Rotary Club, Rotary Club of Madras, was inaugurated in 1929. It was the fourth Club in India. Initially, it was part of the Provisional District-A. The District was later renamed as District 89; a little later it was changed to 56. By that time, more Clubs had been formed in the District and they were regrouped in to 320 and 323. In 1984-85, the Clubs in India were regrouped in line with the revenue districts and the Clubs in and around Madras were covered by District 3230.In the Rotary World, our District is in Zone 6. There are 79 Clubs in the District with over 3,000 members. Our Clubs have implemented commendable projects to make life a little better for the people in our community. Our members have contributed $ 591,909 to the Rotary Foundation during the period 1994-95 to 1998-99. In the first fortyfive days, 109 Paul Harris Fellows and three Major Donors have committed $ 139,000 as contributions to the Foundation. 58 Matching Grants Projects have been implemented; most of them are in various stages of completion. Of the 3-H Grant Projects, two projects are currently in operation - Rehabilitation of polio affected persons [Rotary Club of Madras] and Blood Bank Project [Rotary Club of Madras central] have immensely benefited the needy persons. For two successive years our District was awarded 3-H Grants of $ 287,000 and $ 500,000. All the Clubs actively participate in the Polio Plus Program. More than 1.5m children immunized every year for the last 3 years. No case of polio reported in our District. The Rotarian who initiated the programme in the District, PP Krish Chitale, has been recognized with the Zonal Award for a Polio Free World. The Clubs are active in all the avenues of service. Fellowship and family participation are the two main aspects of all activities.
