About Rotary Madras Cosmos
.......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
The Rotary Club of Madras Cosmos was Chartered on the 21st of October
1992 as the 26th Club of the District 3230, with 42 members.
The club has taken active part in recognising persons of Eminence for
Professional Excellence, and for their contributions to the Society.
Many leading members have honoured the club by accepting the awards
constituted by the club and have been helpful in suggesting activities
that could be undertaken by the club.
The club has sponsored one club in the Madras city in 1994.
The Members of the Club firmly believe that the Social Service projects
undertaken by the club, should yield long term benefits to the
recipients, and to the Neighbourhood.
In all our Social Service Projects, for the Needy, the focus is more on
enabling the recipients to help themselves, and thus become
progressively self dependant.
Some of the ongoing projects undertaken by the Club include
Veeraraghavapuram
A small village on the outskirts of Chennai (Madras) City, At the School
run by the Panchayat (The Elected Village Administration) at
Veeraraghavapuram,
The Club has constructed a building for a School in the year 1994.
Considering the economic backwardness of the Students, the club has
taken the responsibility of donating Books and other study materials
every year, to assist the students of this village
The club has provided Electricity for this School in the year 1995.
Upgrading and making this School well equipped is one of the on going
projects of the club.
In this current year The Club intends to start a Vocational Training
Centre attached to this school. This will help the Children studying
here to become Self Employed when they finish their Schooling. It will
be named after Paul Harris the founder of our movement.
Corporation School - Chennai
A Corporation School is a School run by the City Corporation to provide
low cost education, for those who cannot afford a Private school.
At one such School within Chennai, the Club is engaged in the process
of assisting the students to under go training in Tailoring, Food
Processing and Nursing courses as a part of their curriculum.
The equipment for the training is met by the Club.
To provide for the all round development of the Children, the Club
also has an Interact Club functional at the School.
The School Teachers & Students have shown their reciprocation by
posting improved results year after year.
The Club welcomes Sister Clubs for fulfilling the needs of these
students, mainly in procuring equipments.
Good Care and Nutritious food is a must for every child. A building for
the Crèche was built during last year in a village called Periakkaranai
about 25 Km. from our city.
There are about 50 children from the age of Six months to Five years
old. They are looked after while their labourer parents are busy with
their work in the nearby factories.
We have also provided facility for the unemployed mothers to learn
tailoring, Candle making etc. This creche is in need of assistance to be
equipped fully, to meet the requirement of a pre School.
Gnanadeepam School for the Mentally Retarded
The Club is Assisting a Special School for Mentally Retarded called
Gnana Deepam.
There are 35 Students who are mentally retarded from the age group of
5 yrs to 18 yrs. These children are trained to lead a life which will
not be a burden to their poor parents.
The area where this School is situated is inhabited by uneducated
working class.
These children get trained to help in Sewing, Book binding, Screen
Printing, Making Greeting Cards etc. India especially South India is
famous for Hand loom Fabrics.
The Rotary Club of Madras Cosmos, has donated one Hand operated Loom
for this School. These children weave Bed Spreads, Face Towels, Door
mats, Big Towels and carpets. The Children are also taught to help their
mothers in household work.
If any one assists this School to have yarn supplied to the tune of
Rs.2,000/- per year then they will be engaged fully for that year.
The fabrics made by these children are sold and the proceeds from the
sale, is used for their welfare. Here is a group of children who are to
be cared, nourished and helped. These children should not be neglected
for no mistake of theirs.
